Health Freedom: A Path to Wellness is an innovative program which is promoting increased physical activity while making creative use of Maryland's integral role in the Underground Railroad. Maryland's waterways and it's proximity to the free northern states allowed it to play a key role in the journey to freedom for many escaping enslaved Africans.
Health Freedom participants, called freedom seekers, will embark on a journey to free themselves from the bondage of poor health habits and a sedentary lifestyle. Conductors in the program will guide freedom seekers in the right direction towards a lifetime of physical activity and wellness. FREEDOM!
Following a six week Circle of Friends training program, freedom seekers will participate in a 5K Celebration Walk. It is during this walk where participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their personal struggle for freedom as they walk through paths crossed by the Underground Railroad. In the legacy of champions and pioneers of the past each walker is given an Honor Card with the name of an abolitionst, Quaker or Freedom Seeker. Participants are also given a map outlining historic landmarks and sites which played key roles in the Underground Railroad.
Upon completion of the Celebration Walk, freedom seekers recieve a Freeman's tag symbolizing the success through the middle passage.
Whether you participate in the entire Six Week Circle of FriendsTraining or just do the Celebration Walk, this is a great opportunity to get together with your church, co-workers, school, or association to walk as individuals or as a team! Come out and enjoy health screenings and other wellness activities for the entire family! Find out where your next Celebration Walk will be held.
